How to Install Inkscape on Windows or Mac Computers '>

Should I download the 32 or 64 bit version?
The 32-bit version of Inkscape will work fine on all Windows computers, both 32 and 64 bit. As crafters go, it's highly unlikely you would see any benefit using the 64-bit version. If you have the 64-bit version of Windows and you want to install the 64-bit version of Inkscape, you can, it's not necessary for most users. You can find the version of Windows on your system in Control Panel / System.

After downloading it, go to your Downloads folder and double-click the file to install it. You can accept all defaults and simple click OK or NEXT on each screen to complete the installation.

Mac X11 Install

NOTE: Many times Inkscape will change the default file association for SVG files, you will know this if the icon for your SVG files turns into the Inkscape icon. If you are used to viewing thumbnails of your SVG files, you will need to re-associate the SVG file type back to Internet Explorer. Click here for instructions on how to do this.

Note: The first launch of Inkscape can take a while because it will cache fonts installed on your system.

  1. Download and install XQuartz from xquartz.macosforge.org. Specific instructions on installing XQuartz and support are found at the XQuartz web site. Note: Inkscape runs on XQuartz. This step and the next are required.
  2. Restart the computer or log out and back in to complete the XQuartz installation.
  3. Add Inkscape to your Applications folder.
  4. Run Inkscape. A prompt will ask about the location of X11. Point to XQuartz in your Applications/Utilities directory.
  5. Configure X11's input and pasteboard settings in X11 > Preferences

This IS X11. This is where Apple contributes to and sources what they provide with Mac OS X as X11. The XQuartz project is typically well ahead of what Apple provide.This is GEEKWARE. It requires knowledge of using the CLI found in the Terminal app for full capability. If you don't know what X11 is, if you don't know what MacPorts are or what Fink/Porticus/PortAuthority/Pallet are, then don't download XQuartz. Don't install it. Don't write a one star review out of ignorance. Learn about X11 and XQuartz first.I use X11 apps and features frequently. I love this stuff. But I am a geek and I have taken the time to learn how to use this. I also have unfathomably patience setting up this geek level stuff. It takes unfathomable patience to use X11 because it is designed by geeks for geeks, not for average or even intermediate users. It is in fact a big, frustrating PITA to use X11 successfully! But the rewards are a lot of fun.ALSO NOTE: Apple are no longer going to provide X11 with Mac OS X! It come with the Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installer. INSTEAD Apple are going to direct Mac users to download exactly what we have here: XQuartz, the source project for X11. So if you like X11, download the latest stable XQuartz and get to work with it!BUT! Be sure to read ALL the documentation at the source website BEFORE you download or install new versions. Because this is geekware, IT HAS BUGS. Some bugs may mean that it won't install on or work with your version of Mac OS X. Please do your homework so you're ready for the XQuartz's challenges.
